"A Creation Story" -- Sunday, March 16, 2003

I live about six blocks from the ocean. When it gets warm (and oh boy has it been warm) I like to open the window and the blinds in my bedroom to let the sounds of the surf and the morning sun in. Lately I've been getting up pretty early, and I think thats probably why. The ocean helps me sleep, and the sun helps me get up, rested.

I think I hate chat. Sure, chats great for getting moms secret jalapeno poundcake recipe or sharing pictures of that new $400 hair cream you just "had to have". But try talking about something even marginally important and you'll find that it just doesnt really work. Sarcasm, for example, must get filtered by AOL where it is no doubt repackaged and then resold to business development execs. Things are just too easily misconstrued in tiny, untitled, faceless windows. I would bet that AOL Instant Messenger has destroyed at least as many relationships and friendships as it has helped to create. Human interaction is hard enough without having to rely on little icons of yellow faces to accurately convey emotion. Yep, the internet has actually made some things harder for us poor, unsuspecting humans.

Funny, that.
